A Retreat at The Nano Nagle Centre

Published by under General

The Retreat at the Nano Nagle Centre

Last Tuesday on the 23rd of April Fifth and Sixth class from Burnfort and Analeentha went on a retreat to the Nano Nagle centre. We left school at around 9.30. We reached the centre at around ten. Burnfort were already there when we came.

We followed our class teacher around the building to the entrance. There the nuns met us. There were three of them. One nun was from England, another was from Australia and the third was from India.

The first thing we had to do was listen to a song and then tell the nuns what it was about. The song was about Jesus.

After that we were split into four groups. Burnfort were mixed with us. A different nun went with a different group. I was with the nun from England. She showed us around the organic farm. The first thing she showed us were their too donkeys named Toffee and Coffee. I definitely didn’t know which one was which as they were so alike.

When we were finished looking at the donkeys we looked at their chickens and vegetable patch. We saw a couple of chicken eggs. Then we went up to an old shed and saw their compost heap. There were lots of flies around it so I stayed well away from it.

At 11 we went back inside to get our small lunch then we went back outside to eat it. All the girls sat on the right side and nearly all the boys sat on the left side. At 11.15 we split into our groups again but we went inside. My group went to one of the rooms with sun flowing in. We talked about the gifts and the fruits of the Holy Spirit. It was very relaxing. We also learned prayers about the Holy Spirit.

We had our big lunch after that. Then we went outside again. We talked about Nano Nagle’s childhood. It was very interesting. We talked about how she attended a hedge school then went to France to get educated. At the very end we had a special mass. We sang a few hymns. Our parents came to collect us at around 2.30. Then we went back to school to get our schoolbags. I really enjoyed the retreat. I thought it was great!

Orienteering Glengarra Woods

Published by under General

Orienteering in Glengarra Woods

On the 17th of April Fifth and Sixth classes went to Glengarra Woods for the orienteering finals. We had previously been orienteering in Doneraile Park and where two boys came second in the pairs competition. As a result we went to Glengarra Woods for the finals. As well as our school there were many other schools from Ireland competing.

We left the school at half past nine in a bus and arrived at about half ten. When we arrived, Mr. Hourigan counted us and took us to the starting point. We gathered there and waited until we got the signal to go. We were given maps and a SI card.

Fifth class boys and girls singles had a course of 1.7km to cover. We had two Fifth class boys competing in this course. There was a shorter pairs course where competitors took part together. There were seven pairs from our school and two individuals. The singles were Conor Corbett and Tim McCarthy.

I was in one of the pairs and got lost very early in the course since I couldn’t find the second marker. When I eventually found it, it was quite easy from there on… until the sixth or seventh marker.  The course was challenging at times but enjoyable overall. When my group returned, we waited for everyone to finish and then came back to school. All in all I think everyone had a great time.

Orienteering

Orienteering in Doneraile Park

On the 31st January 2013, Fifth and Sixth class attended the Cork Schools Orienteering Association (C.S.O.A) Championships in Doneraile Park. It was a wet morning but the weather soon picked up and a great day was had by all.

As this was our first competition, most of us entered the pair’s competition except for Rory Holland and Tim McCarthy. When we all set off and tried to find all the points in earnest because we were determined to get in the fastest time as possible. The distance ranged from 2.9km to 3.4km and we trekked through thick forests and parts of the park we’d never encountered before. It was a totally new experience reading maps and doing it with a friend beside you made it even more enjoyable!

We were relieved when we arrived at the finish line and returned to the meeting point in the park, and surrounded by lots of people instead of deer! We were very proud of our finishing times. Odhran Sexton and Conor Corbett did the school proud by being placed second in the boys’ pair’s category.

We thoroughly enjoyed this new sport. It had many different aspects; map reading, problem solving and of course your level of fitness! Hopefully this will be a new hobby for us!

Well done to all!!!

6TH CLASS INDOOR HURLING

On the 11th of March 2013 Analeentha’s  boys took part in an indoor hurling competition in the Nagle Rice secondary school in Doneraile . The teams in the competition were Kildorrery, Ballygiblin, Liscarroll, Ballygown and Analeentha. The panel of players who took part were Darragh Buckley, Ben O Connor, Aidan Walsh, Conor Corbett, Luke Brophy, Rory Holland, Tim McCarthy and Darragh Pratt. Our first game was against Ballygown. Sadly Ballygown defeated Analeentha on a score line of 5-3. We were down 4-0 but made a great comeback in the second half and got the score back to 4-3.  However on the last break of play Ballygown raced up the field and lashed it into the back of the net, but that did not stop Analeentha. In the next game versus Ballygiblin we recorded a 4-2 victory. We then easily accounted for Kildorrery on a score line of 5-0. In our final game we defeated Liscarroll 4-1.We finished as runners-up to Ballygown. It was a great day overall and our boys made us proud.
