FR. BURNS SHIELD ‘A’ FINAL

IMG_1435

Analeentha made amends for last year’s final defeat to Ballygown by defeating the same opposition in a pulsating game. With no quarter taken or given by either side, it was always going to come down to the team that wanted it the most. Analeentha started the brighter in the first half but some late scores from a couple of 45s and a free for Ballygown meant that only the bare minimum separated the teams at the short whistle (3-2 to 2-4). If the first half was exciting, the second half was even better. Eoin Walsh continued where he left off in the first half with a string of fine saves; Sarah Barrett and Ciara Lawlee completely blotted out the Ballygown attack; Conor Corbett ran himself into the ground and Luke Brophy continued to be a menace to the Ballygown rearguard. Second half substitute Cian O’Connell thundered into the game and Aidan Walsh threw his body on the line on a couple of occasions late on when Ballygown had thrown everything into attack. Two unbelievable shoulders in the space of 10 seconds left opposition players on the ground both times when scores looked inevitable. ‘Captain Fantastic’ Ciara O’Callaghan played a leader’s role and led by example all the way. The full-time whistle was followed by great scenes of excitement as worthy winners Analeentha joined Ballygown at the top of the roll of honour with 7 wins each. Final score Analeentha 7-7, Ballygown 4-4.

Analeentha lined out as follows: Eoin Walsh; Rory Holland, Aidan Walsh, Ciara O’Callaghan (captain); Conor Corbett (2-3 (0-1 free, 0-1 45), Ciara Lawlee; Luke Brophy (4-2 (0-2 frees), Ben Buckley (0-1), Barry Walsh (1-0). Subs: Sarah Barrett for Rory Holland; Cian O’Connell (0-1) for Barry Walsh; Niamh Creedon for Ben Buckley.

Great credit is due to the players for the tremendous character shown, especially in the second half. For six of this team it was their last outing in an Analeentha jersey, and they can all hold their heads up high after this wonderful performance! Well done to all involved for ending the school year on such a high note!!!!!!!

FR. BURNS SHIELD ‘B’ FINAL

Analeentha overcame a dogged Ballygown team in the final of the Fr. Burns Shield ‘B’ Section. Trailing by 1-1 to 1-0 at half-time in a tight low-scoring game, Analeentha stepped up a couple of gears in the second half, and outscored their opponents by 3 goals to no score. Niamh Cronin, Michael Buckley, Darragh Lawlee, Cian Walsh and Rory Walsh all excelled for the winners. The following players took part: Louise O’Riordan, Michael Buckley, Evan O’Flynn (1-0), Ciara Tanner, Niamh Cronin, Darragh Lawlee (1-0), Cian Walsh (1-0), Rory Walsh, Holly Garvey, Adam Rodgers (captain), Ellen Burke, Ben Cronin, Darragh Walsh (1-0), Michael Murphy and Mark Doolan. Well done to all involved!!!!!

19/6/2014: A brave performance by Analeentha in the final of this blitz held in Kilshannig GAA Grounds, Glantane saw us fall short of taking the title. We had topped our group after wins over Ballygown (5-4 to 1-1), Baltydaniel (5-3 to 2-1) and Convent Primary, Mallow (6-3 to 0-0). We qualified for the final against Bweeng and led twice in the first half before a late free saw us behind by a point (1-2 to 1-1) at the short whistle. An Ashling Cronin point levelled matters early in the second half, and a Niamh Creedon goal put us in the lead, but Bweeng replied with a goal of their own immediately. A fresher Bweeng team pulled away late on, and try as we could, we could not close the gap. Final score: Analeentha 2-3, Bweeng 3-7.

The following players took part: Ashling Cronin, Ciara Lawlee, Ciara O’Callaghan, Ciara Tanner, Doireann Buckley, Ellen Burke, Holly Garvey, Louise O’Riordan, Niamh Creedon, Niamh Cronin and Sarah Barrett.

Scorers: v Ballygown – Ashling Cronin (3-1), Niamh Creedon (1-1), Sarah Barrett (1-0), Ciara Lawlee (0-1), Ciara O’Callaghan (0-1, free).

v Baltydaniel – Ashling Cronin (4-0), Niamh Creedon (1-1), Ciara O’Callaghan (0-1), Sarah Barrett (0-1).

v Convent Primary – Ciara O’Callaghan (3-1; 0-1 (free)), Ciara Lawlee (1-1), Holly Garvey (1-1), Niamh Creedon (1-0).

v Bweeng Ashling Cronin (1-2; 0-1 (45), 0-1 (free)), Niamh Creedon (1-1).

Well done to all involved!!!!!

Both pitches were in use as the coaches conducted a series of Gaelic Football drills at each station. Great fun was had by all at the camp which lasted for over two hours. 11/6/2014: Analeentha took on Rahan NS in our final group game of the Sciath na Scol hurling competition today in Clyda Rovers GAA Grounds. Analeentha got off to a flying start, and led by 2-2 to 0-0 after 6 minutes, all the scores coming from Conor Corbett. Further goals by Rory Holland, Darragh Lawlee (2) and Cian Walsh, along with a Barry Walsh point saw Analeentha lead by 6-3 to 0-0 at half-time. A solid rearguard and a hard-working midfield supplied plenty of opportunities for the forwards in the second half, and they obliged with Luke Brophy (1-2) and Darragh Lawlee (2-0) completing the rout. A brave Rahan team battled to the end but could not break down a very determined Analeentha side. Final score: Analeentha 9-5, Rahan 0-0. The following players took part: Adam Rodgers, Aidan Walsh, Barry Walsh, Cian O’Connell, Cian Walsh, Conor Corbett, Darragh Lawlee, Darragh Pratt, Eoin Walsh, Luke Brophy, Rory Holland and Rory Walsh. Well done to all the boys!!

CORK v WATERFORD, MUNSTER SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP

8/6/2014: Well done to the Cork hurlers on defeating Waterford in the replay of the quarter-final of the Munster SHC. Tension was high in Ms. Allen’s room leading up to the game as two students had close relatives taking part. Mark Kelleher’s uncle, Shane O’Neill, lined out for Cork, while Michael ‘Brick’ Walsh, an uncle of Seán O’Sullivan, togged out for Waterford.

IMG_1364IMG_1368IMG_1377IMG_1359

4/6/2014: 20 teams took part in this blitz which took place in Mallow GAA grounds today. Analeentha were well represented with two teams from the school taking part. Both teams played exceedingly well. Team A played against Gaelscoil Thomais Daibhis and two different teams from Kilworth, while Team B played another team from Kilworth and two separate Newtownshandrum teams. Analeentha recorded victories in all of their six games. A special mention must go to Sean O’Sullivan who managed to break a goalpost with one of his shots. His uncle, Waterford hurler Michael ‘Brick’ Walsh, would be proud of that one!  Well done to all the boys and girls who took part: Aisling Creedon, Cathal O’Riordan, Clodagh Walsh, Darragh Walsh, Eanna Garvey, Isabelle Lee, Kate O’Connell, Katie O’Toole, Lauryn O’Flynn, Michael Corbett, Michael Murphy, Niall Burke, Peter Holland, Sean O’Sullivan, Sophia Breen and Tom Barrett.

LADIES GAELIC FOOTBALL BLITZ

DSC_0457

29/5/2014: Despite all the numerical odds, a gallant Analeentha team performed heroically, but sadly went out at the semi-final stage of this 10 a-side competition organized by Mallow Ladies Football Club. Analeentha progressed to the semi-final of the cup competition after victories over Killavullen (7-2 to 1-0) and Ballyclough (13-3 to 5-4). Having already qualified at this stage, we rested some of our senior players for our last game of the group. As both we and our opponents, Convent Primary School, Mallow, were guaranteed a placed in the semis, the result was immaterial. Despite this, we still gave it our all before losing to a well-balanced Convent team. In the semi-final we faced more stiff Mallow opposition in the form of Gaelscoil Thomais Daibhis. Trailing by 2-2 to 1-2 at half time, with Ashling Cronin providing all our scores, we threw everything at our opponents in the second half. A Ciara O’Callaghan goal levelled matters, but it was not to be, as we went down by 3-3 to 2-2 in the end. Our conquerors, Gaelscoil, led the subsequent final for most of the match before tiring and conceding a late goal to the Convent team, and going down by two points. The girls can hold their heads up high after their brave performances. Well done, girls! The following players took part: Ashling Cronin, Ciara Lawlee, Ciara O’Callaghan, Ciara Tanner, Doireann Buckley, Ellen Burke, Holly Garvey, Katie O’Callaghan, Louise O’Riordan, Meadhbh Sexton, Niamh Creedon, Niamh Cronin and Sarah Barrett.

GAA_RESPECT_TAG_LIME

Congratulations to Ciara O’Callaghan (6th class) on being chosen by Cumann na mBunscol to play in the Go Games exhibition match at half-time in the All-Ireland Football Semi-Final in Croke Park on Sunday 24th August. Ciara was selected on the strength of her performances for Analeentha when helping us to win the INTO Mini Sevens girls football competition back in December. Playing in Croke Park on such an important day is a dream come true for any sportsperson, and we wish Ciara all the best. GO CIARA!!

SCIATH NA SCOL HURLING

irish-hurling-ball-and-stick-joe-fox

26/5/2014: Analeentha went down to a very strong St. Josephs CBS, Doneraile team today. Forced to line out with every available member of the panel, and left without any substitute in a 12 a-side competition, we were always going to be up against it. However, we battled gamely, and played our hearts out. Alas, it was not to be, and the Doneraile boys proved worthy winners on the day on a score line of 3-13 to 0-2. Well done to all the boys who took part: Adam Rodgers, Aidan Walsh, Barry Walsh, Cian O’Connell, Cian Walsh, Conor Corbett, Darragh Lawlee, Darragh Pratt, Eoin Walsh, Luke Brophy, Rory Holland and Rory Walsh.

12-16/5/2014: As part of the Active Schools Flag initiative, Analeentha school recently hosted its inaugural Active Schools Week. The week commenced with the entire student body taking part in a version as Gaeilge of the Maori Haka – ‘An Haka Gaelach’. The activities continued throughout the week with traditional events such as Gaelic football, hurling and Irish dancing, contemporary sports like basketball, soccer and gymnastics, and the less familiar sport of unihoc. Zumba dancing, parachute games and a scavenger hunt also proved to be immensely popular with the children, as did freestyles skills demonstrations by 1st – 6th class students.

The week finished with a 2.5km walk to the local Clyda Rovers GAA pitch – undertaken by all the pupils, staff and some parents – followed up by a sports day including activities such as hurling, soccer, rounders, running races, spud and spoon races, sack races, hurdles races, quoits and parachute games. While the brilliant sunshine contributed to a wonderful week, the enthusiasm of the pupils and staff ensured that Analeentha’s first ever Active Schools Week was made a truly memorable occasion.

   ACTIVE SCHOOLS FLAG

13/1/2014: Analeentha NS is working towards receiving an ‘Active Schools Flag’. The Active School Flag is a non-competitive initiative which highlights the importance of physical activity and sport in schools and communities in which they are based. This programme is organised and overseen by Mayo Education Centre. The programme encourages all schools to evaluate their current position regarding the provision of P.E. and after-school sports. Another area that requires attention is investigating community based activities for the children and increasing parents’ awareness of facilities, teams and clubs in the community. The school will soon be selecting representatives from different Classes to form an ‘Active Schools Committee’ and these pupils will work co-operatively with school Staff and parents. The committee will meet and discuss activity-based topics within the school and community. The committee will also encourage classmates to ‘Be Active’ after school. It is our overall aim to provide a wide and varied physical health programme in Analeentha NS, both during allocated P.E. times and after-schools activities. We want to raise the awareness of the importance of being active, how fun it can be, how you can make friends and enjoy the benefits of a happy, healthy lifestyle. Watch this space as we endeavour to achieve Active School Flag status over the next few months.
