Green Schools Update:

We have been awarded our third Green Schools flag for Water. Congratulations to everyone for all of  water conservation efforts and work done by the green schools committee members. Katie and Michael collected the flag at the Awards ceremony in the Radisson Hotel in Cork. A great achievement and a great day out!

March 2017: We are working towards our third Green Schools flag. This flag is the water flag. We have been involved in lots of activities throughout the year learning about water. We invited John Aherne to speak to us about water. John is a civil engineer from the County Council. He spoke to us about our local river, The Clyda and how it supplies the town of Mallow. He also spoke about water treatment, how water is found, how water is tested, ways water gets contaminated, how water towers work and the role of engineers in the water cycle. We found the talk very informative and engaging.

March 2015: Earth Hour is a worldwide movement for the planet organized by the World Wide Fund for Nature  (WWF). The event is held worldwide annually encouraging individuals, communities, households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the last Saturday in March, as a symbol for their commitment to the planet. It was famously started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007. Since then it has grown to engage more than 7000 cities and towns worldwide. The Green Schools committee in Analeentha NS have asked that all members of the school community join in with us in switching off their lights between 8:30-9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 28th.

We are very busy this month preparing for the growing season  We have planted lots of vegetable seeds indoors with some flowers to help attract helpful bees! We have beetroot, onion, rocket, rosemary, lettuce, pumpkins, cucumbers, tomatoes, courgettes and peas. We also put Duke of York potatoes in egg boxes with the ‘eyes’ facing the light. This will prepare them for planting out at the end of the month. On March 12th a garden clean up was organised by parents to prepare for planting. We are so grateful to all the volunteers who did a fantastic job repairing beds, weeding, and preparing the soil. Thank you very much! We look forward to planting out once the weather gets warmer.

February 2015: The Green Schools committee are hard at work in preparation for the visit next month of the Green Schools Assessor. If this visit is deemed to be successful, this will be a step closer to our goal of a second Green Flag.

We were delighted to welcome back some of the 2014 Sixth class children who have very kindly donated three apple trees to our garden. It is a lovely gesture and we look forward to tasting the apples in the coming years. Thank you to Kevin Holland for helping us plant them.

January 2015: Analeentha N.S. held its first ‘Dark Day’ this month. Members of the Green Schools committee spoke at the start of the school day about the importance of conserving energy in the classroom. All lights in the school were turned off for the duration of the day. Informative videos about renewable energy, fossil fuels and the effects of greenhouse gases were shown. Junior Infants – 2nd class did colouring pictures related to the theme of renewable energy, 3rd class – 4th class did activities based on fossil fuels and renewable energy sources, and 5th – 6th classes participated in an energy quiz and completed worksheets based on fossil fuels and renewable energy sources.

DARK DAY

eh

The ‘Day of Action’ is an opportunity for students, staff and the wider community to get together to work towards achieving some of the targets set out in our action plan. This year it will be carried out in conjunction with Earth Hour, which started in 2007 as a lights-off event to raise awareness about climate change. The benefits of the ‘Day of Action’ include raising awareness of Green-Schools within and beyond the school, and involving the wider community.

December 2014: The Green Schools committee have decided to hold a ‘Day of Action’ in the school to help promote energy efficient practices and energy awareness. It will be held on January 16th, 2015 and will be called ‘Dark Day’. All lights in the school will be turned off for the duration of the day. Informative videos about renewable energy, fossil fuels and the effects of greenhouse gases will be shown. Various age-appropriate activities will also take place in each classroom.

November 2014: The Green Schools committee have been very busy of late, designing posters for the Green Schools noticeboard, monitoring the electricity meters in the school, and ensuring that lights, computers and overhead projectors are switched off when not in use. Keep up the good work and remember -BE BRIGHT, TURN OFF THE LIGHT!

Work in the garden has finished now. We continue to use our compost bins. We look forward to preparing the beds and planting seeds in spring.

October 2014: The following students have been successful in gaining a place on the Green Schools Committee: Litter/Waste Committee – Cian O’Connell, Ellen Burke, Abbie Hayes, Isabelle Lee, Kate Williamson, Darragh Cronin. Energy Committee – Sarah Barrett, Meadhbh Sexton, Peter Holland, Katie O’Toole, Laura Buckley, Rachel Church.

This month we made our friendly scarecrow named “Zoltan”. We had lots of fun designing him and stuffing his straw belly. Some committee members shared their garden produce in a Halloween display of pumpkins, courgettes and cooking apples. The pumpkins were enormous and we intend to grow some in the school garden for spring.

September 2014: This year Analeentha N.S. hopes to achieve its second Green Flag. Having already acquired the flag for the litter and waste theme, we now hope to add the flag for the energy section.

This was our harvest month with some wonderful crops available in the garden. We had peas, potatoes, cabbage, lettuce, courgettes and a selection of herbs such as rosemary, lavender, thyme, chives and oregano. Thanks very much to parents and children who watered crops over the summer. We hope the strawberries were tasty!!

HEALTHY EATING & GREEN SCHOOLS 2013/14

Analeentha N.S. is a health promoting school.

A committee has been established which consists of pupils, parents and teachers.

So far a healthy eating policy has been put in place.

We remind everyone that treats are only for Fridays.

We are striving for this school year to achive our Green School Status.

To date we have placed recycle and compost bins in every classroom, we planted vegtables and flowers in the Summer and we have a compost bin in the field. We are trying out best to keep our school clean and tidy and to do our bit for the environment. If we all work together we can do it in 2013/2014

UPDATE 2013

There is a big drive on in the school to achieve the green flag this year. The new committee are gard at work promoting everything green. At the last meeting it was deceided that no more tin foil was to be brought to school – cling film, sandwich bags or lunchboxes are to be used as an alternative. Children are also being asked to re-use their drink bottles as many of these end up in our recycle bins needlessly. Our compost bin is going well and the committee have drawn up a rota for emptying the bins. Also in an effort to reduce our school waste children are being asked to take home their leftovers/packaging from their lunchboxes. Junior and Senior Infants have been writing and drawing about achieveing the green flag and their efforts are hanging across from the Green schools notice board. We need parents to get completely behind the school’s efforts to achieve the green flag and to encourage your children to be greener. We can do it 🙂

Day of Action at Analeentha NS

Well done to everyone who recently took part in our ‘Day of Action’ for the Green Schools. The day began with a recycle drive. A collection point was set up by the office where we collected old batteries, ink cartridges and mobile phones. THe response was brilliant!

Following our recycle drive we did a huge clean up of the school and its surrounding areas. Junior Infants to 2nd Class did a great job cleaning up the school, playground, field and carpark. 3rd to 6th class did a clean up of the roads leading t0 the school. The results were incredible. Well done to everyone 🙂

A big thank you to Colette Creedon for coming to the school to play the energy game with all classes.
